I enjoyed the travelogue aspect of the book, the accounts of surfing and occasional pithy insights. But the author often comes off smug and way too often uses $5 words. They not only fuck up the reading flow, but really turned me against him as a narrator.

A heartbreaking tale of life lived on the edge with descriptions of waves which, if you're a surfer, may bring you to tears. A must read for any perambulating wave seeker

Was an average book at best. I liked hearing of Allans dog and of all the nature imagery he depicts during his travels. This book certainly makes me want to get out on the water more than I have been as of late. Id put this book in the four range if there was more meaning to be derived from it. Also bringing In Search Of Captain Zero down into the 3 star zone was Allans use of words and sentence structure. He formulates these crazy sentences with words that, for me at least, seemed much more

If they decided to hand out prizes for the individual who bought the most copies of this book, I would win, hands down. For many years, I prodded every single one of my friends, relatives, Romans, and countrymen, to read this, and if they didnt start reading it that very instant, I managed to foist my copy on them, and of course bought another, and the whole cycle started over. In Search of Captain Zero by Allan Weisbecker is a very suspenseful book that has problems and fun in every chapter. Written in parts, Weisbecker writes about his journey to Central America in search of Captain Zero, his best friend. Thinking that his journey was going to be a quick and safe one, he didn't expect the many twist and turns that confronted him. This book was excellent. I think I was a beautiful insight into the mind of a man in love with the ocean and surfing to find himself, yet not finding it. Learning he is alone and not the man he thought he was; questioning life and the universe. Its funny, incredible well written and a wild ride. A little sad. Better than Barbarian Days and on par in prose. If you dig a good surf read, this is a top. Read it and judge for yourself.
