Joseph Peterson has once again applied his diligent research and rigorous scholarship to the reconstruction and analysis of an early-modern grimoire. In the present case the text in question is a composite handbook from the early 17th century comprising methods for operating with three distinct classes of spirits, with all of the necessary preparations, consecrations, invocations, etc. In this respect, the book is not unique among others of its genre - indeed, as Peterson demonstrates, it draws extensively (sometimes verbatim) upon earlier grimoires such as the Heptameron and the Fourth Book of pseudo-Agrippa. Rather, the value of this edition lies primarily in two historiographic directions: retrospectively, it delineates the relations and variations among the extant manuscripts, thus setting the stage for a reconstruction or rediscovery of a hypothetical urtext; prospectively, it reveals a major source for the spirit hierarchy of the later Grimoirium Verum.
