This is a massive book, and I've been working my 300 pages a day on it for a couple of days. It is a must read for anyone teaching a survey, but you have to read and digest the whole thing--the rich individual cases, like how middlebrow opera spread from Europe to every corner of colonies as a marker of status, to the sweeping themes of infrastructure, trade and military power brought change (good and often very bad) to the world. Osterhammel draws from a vast pool of secondary works, sort of a

I read about 200 pages of this book and skimmed another 200 pages. There's a temptation to praise books like this simply because they are so exhaustive (though Osterhammel himself would be the first to deny compliments of that sort). Maybe not surprisingly, what Osterhammel's book offers in breadth it severely lacks in depth. In terms of what I know from other sources the facts seem correct, which is in itself no small feat in a book of this size, but Osterhammel rarely offers much analysis or

A solid undertaking of the 19th C eventsThis is a really solid book that aimed for both depth and breadth at the range of historical events. Osterhammer really tried to look at the major events that happened in the 19th C and to trace their histories. Worth reading.

Fascinating, but not a light read! I did like it, but it lacked the detail and human interest that would have drawn me in and got me through it a lot faster. But...I shouldn't criticise it for not being something it was never intended to be; it is a general history, looking at trends and movements and patterns over the nineteenth century (going as far back in some instances as the middle of the eighteenth, and looking ahead at times to the end of WWII), and would probably work better if the

The Transformation of World: A Global History of the Nineteenth Century is an absolutely fabulous tome on various aspects of the world in the "long Nineteenth Century," beginning sometime in the late 18th century and finishing around World War One. The author looks at the conceptual frameworks of history during this period, analyzing everything from the various societies conceptual framework of time, to the various nuances of industrial development and economic advancement nations faced on

The sheer breadth and depth of Osterhammel's coverage -- geographically and topically -- is staggering. This book is packed with all sorts of fascinating tidbits about interactions, connections, and comparisons that I had never thought about before. The first part of the book is clearly the strongest -- his chapters on frontiers, cities, empires, revolutions and state-building were terrific. Of the shorter thematic essays that made up the second half of the book, the only topic that I have

Not sure why this got such a great review in the NYRB. It is a truly amazing demonstration of scholarship, and perhaps that is why. It it so comprehensive in it's scope that it feels like a recitation of unrelated facts, at times. In addition, it is a slow thick read. I swear my kindle weighed more while I read it.
